Optimization, monitoring, and maintenance of cooling technology

Neglecting the optimization, monitoring, and maintenance of cooling equipment such as air conditioners and refrigerators results in increased energy use, lower cooling performance, and shortens equipment life. Effective optimization, monitoring, and maintenance of cooling equipment could deliver substantial electricity savings, particularly if equipment has not been maintained for a long time.

This knowledge brief outlines the need for maintaining and servicing cooling technology and estimates the impact of better optimization, monitoring, and maintenance of cooling equipment.

Global, Regional, and Country Activities Supported by the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program

Cooling is essential to health, prosperity, and the environment, underpinning many of the Sustainable Development Goals. Yet currently most cooling is energy intensive and highly polluting. Demand for cooling is booming, so there is an urgent need to not only cut pollution from existing cooling but to ensure future cooling needs are met sustainably. K-CEP supports a wide range of projects to meet this need for improving cooling efficiency.

This document consolidates summaries of each project K-CEP has approved for support to date. It focuses in particular on improving the efficiency of air conditioning and refrigeration and enabling district cooling. This portfolio of activity is being delivered across developing countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean alongside various efforts at a global level to improve efficient clean cooling awareness and action
